Redugent, also chemical identified as Hydrol is the mother liquor obtained during the manufacturing process of dextrose monohydrate. Redugent is a brown colour syrup liquid.

  1. Hydrol is used in the fermentation industries as a sole source of Carbon. It can be used in manufacturing of following fermentation products.

    • Ethyl Alcohol, 1Butanol, Lactoc Acid, Dglunoic Acid, Levunic Acid.

    • It is also used in antibiotic fermentation products.

  2. It can be used in the manufacturing of D-Fructose.

  3. Maximum yields can be obtaioned is Hydrol is substituted for Cane Molasses to the extent of 10% to 20% of the total sugar.

  4. Hydrol is used (in UK) for brewing industry.

  5. It can also be used as animal feed.

  6. It can be used in Rayon industry, in spinning bath. The Hydrol is used in viscose process for manufacturing rayon, as glucose (2 - 10%) in spinning bath mainly to prevent crystallization of the salts, since sharp salt crystal formation on gurds and godet wheel may break filaments during spinning process.

  7. It is used in preparation of Caramel colour.

  8. It can be used as a fertilizer.

  9. Hydrol is used in tanning industry.

  10. Hydrol is used by textile industry as a reducing agent.

It can be substituted for Sodium Sulphide to reduce the amount of Sulphide in mills effluent.

Suphur dyes, like vat dyes, are water insoluble compounds and have to be converted into water soluble substantive form before application to textile materials. Traditional method of this conversion is a treatment with aqueous solution of Sodium Sulphide. This application however contributed to 'sulphide' in Mill's effluent. On account of its toxicity to the receining water bodies, the State Pollution Control Board prescribes the limit of 2 ppm (maximum) for sulphide in the treated effluent of the mill.

Hydrol contains about 50% of reducing sugars, Experiments reveal that 100 parts of sodium sulphide can be substituted by 65 parts of Hydrol plus 25 parts of caustic soda.

The dyeings obtained after this substitution are equivalent to conventional dyeings in depth os shades, fasteness properties, etc. Improved quality of dyed fabric can be obtained in terms of reduction in its bronziness. Reduction in sulphide concentration in effluent treatment would be from 30 ppm to less than 2 ppm.


After substitution os Hydrol for Sodium Sulphide, not only will the sulphide in effluent reduce that also settling characteristics in Secondary Settling tank of the activated sludge unit can be seen improving. This reduction of sulphide levels in effluent would result in less corrosion of the treatment plant equipment also.
